{view the invitation}
Speak-Easy Art Gallery is proud to host an evening of music and art, in an effort to raise money for Art Creation Foundation for Children in Haiti. The event will feature live performances by BriDine (Brian Herkert & Nadine LaFond, guitar & vocals of Swampadelica) and Sebastian Marconato (Native American flutes & African percussion). There will also be works by the students of the school as well as art donated by local and over seas artists on exhibit. Proceeds from the sales of these works will be going to Art Creation Foundation for Children (www.artforhaitianchildren.org).

We're planning to let loose to help create a powerful vibe and encourage giving for the young students who are now creating art for their lives. Included in the exhibit are traditional Jacmelien papier mache art by ACFFC's own students! Be sure to bring some spending money to collect these young artists' bright and beautiful works.

The event will take place at Speak-Easy Art Gallery located at 817 Main Street Boonton, NJ at 7pm on Saturday July 31.

    Thanks to all "the fearless ones" who braved the snow to join us @ The Sherman Theater for Swampadelica's set! We had so much fun with everyone out there dancing, cheering and spreading good vibes all over the place.

    We really appreciate the support of all the fans who attended the Pre-Party / Haiti Benefit @ Sarah Street Grill (huge thank you to Linda Moakler aka l.mo for putting that together for us) and all who collected ACFFC students' artwork from Haiti at Swampadelica's merch table. A special thanks to the Quimby Mountain Band for helping out our merch table when we were caught volunteer-less due to the massive snow and for just being amazing, caring people. Quimby rocks! Thanks to the crew at The Sherman Theater for all of their caring and thoughtful support throughout the night. And of course, thanks again and again to the Sarah Street Grill for being such an all-around generous community resource.

    We're still tallying up the results of the Pre-Party & merch table art show Haiti benefit and will post that soon. We're also rescheduling the group art show (location / date TBA) to provide a better opportunity for solid Haiti fundraising and for artists to attend and enjoy the event as the recent snow storm de-railed our original plans.

    All around amazing night! Stay tuned for more, including a live recording of Swamp's set (thanks to Taper Mike!)

    Thank you everyone!

ACFFC Students Found & Their School is Still Standing!!!

ACFFC students & Judy Hoffman

Subject: Update - Haiti - Art For Haitian Children - Jacmel

Good news. Last evening we were able to confirm that our children made it through, as did our staff/families. Most have no homes, and all are sleeping in the street. Many of the children can not find their families/relatives and those who can report that their homes have been destroyed as has much of Jacmel (buildings down everywhere, deaths and injuries have not yet been assessed, two schools collapsed I am told w children inside, etc.-horrible) There is no aid whatsoever that has made it in to Jacmel. Miracle is that our building is standing just is a miracle that all made it through and today they will go there (aftershocks over) and there is food and water. They are going to cook and take food to those in need just as I saw in my dreams. ACFFC is going to become a central aid point in Jacmel so we need all the help we can get. It is impossible to send supplies right now so please, we need to raise all the funds we can ... people are resourceful and I am told a market is open in Port Au Prince and that there are still things to be purchased in Jacmel. Each moment as it comes. And I am grateful. I spoke with Georges middle of the night and all are in shock, but at least they are together. I also spoke with some of the girls. They are frightened and I did all I could, as did Gerline Lafontant Fenelon (who patched me through on the call) to assuage their immediate fears. We have promised them that as soon as we can, we will get there. In the meanwhile, Gerline's good friend Papoush who is in PAP is going to Jacmel this morning by moto or bike or foot to further assess the situation and see how we can best get done what needs to be done.

Please write/call the world and let them know that Jacmel is getting no help.
so far at all and there is desperate need.

We need to raise funds, knowing that ACFFC will be a central aid location in Jacmel. Our children are prepared to help as are staff. We are all one family. Please focus on raising funds. We can not yet bring in supplies.

You may donate via www.artforhaitianchildren.org or by check (information provided on the site) or via our facebook page - please call or send an email if you need information and I will respond as quickly as I am able.

Will update as have more news.

There is much work to be done.

We are all grateful.

beloved haīti !!! ~ view of Jacmel, Haīti {photo credit: wikipedia}

8/1/09

heading to haiti!!!!!

Nadīne is off to Haīti to visit with family and meet with the students and staff at ACFFC (Art Creation Foundation for Children), a non-profit arts organization created for the education and personal growth of children in need in Jacmel, Haiti. The school provides vital resources to help empower the students through the arts.

Art Lives Studio became acquainted with and got involved in fundraising for ACFFC in the Fall of 2008. The studio's "Haiti Relief Benefit" is an ongoing grassroots effort, which calls on the arts community to donate artwork, supplies, food and funds to Haiti, including the students of ACFFC in support of their efforts to sustain themselves and their school with the artwork that they create through the guidance of their teachers (both in Haiti and visiting artists abroad) and the generous support of people all over who are moved to help them.

"The last time I was in Haiti, I was five years old. I still have vivid memories of my time there and am looking forward to all the new sights, sounds, experiences and tears (I'm sure). It's high time and way overdue. I'm so grateful for the blessing of this trip; to have this time with my family and the students at ACFFC and to set my feet on my personal homeland, especially Jacmel, where my late father was born. As an artist, it will also be interesting to see how my work changes, as I will no doubt be changed, by this experience. It's one thing to have been inspired by the spirit of Haiti all these years but it's quite another to be face to face with it."

~ Nadīne

ON TOUR in the Caribbean

Nadīne, along with husband and fellow band mate, Brian Herkert on guitar, and Bill Rust on drums, have been invited to perform on the island of Saint-Barthélemy [AKA St. Barth's / St. Bart's] from November to early December 2007.  The three had begun touring as The Nadīne LaFond Trio, an acoustic side project of experimental roots band, Swampadelica, and were spotted by veteran St. Barth's urban folk & jazz artist, KJ Denhert, who recently performed with them at the StroudsFest art & music festival in downtown Stroudsburg, PA. The trio plan to return with live highlights of originals and vintage standards to release on CD.

In addition to music making, this time will also serve as a self-imposed art residency to continue work on an upcoming collection of paintings, works on paper and found object constructions, which will debut in a solo exhibit in 2008. Details on the show to be announced early next year. However, a collection of small-scaled paintings inspired by the island of St. Barth's will be available to collectors directly from artlives.net.

scholarship funds for students in Haiti

The Air Markers Series, shown above, was donated to an art auction on Friday, Dec. 1, 2006 in support of {Yele Haiti}, a foundation started by Grammy-Award winning musician, producer and social entrepreneur Wyclef Jean that is changing thousands of lives in the desperately poor but optimistic nation of Haiti to benefit Haitian students with scholarships for enrollment to University.

The auction was organized by Haitian Education & Leadership Program

Artist's Statement

"The Air Markers series is part of a collection of works titled, 'Flight Dreams', which is an account of my subconscious exploration of faith and transition and is influenced by the visual cues of Aboriginal dream paintings, maps and views from airplane windows. These three little paintings were created during a fertile time and engaged a strong sense of becoming. It's fitting that they support the empowerment of students devoted to manifesting a better life".
