Radical Selfcare
The great poet, professor and activist, Audre Lorde, left behind powerfully transformative words for generations to consider. Amidst the many treasures of poetry and speeches that brought to light the intersections of race, class and gender, was a passionate call for taking back our wellness, especially for marginalized communities. This is the overall inspiration for the Radical Selfcare limited edition prints collection. Through these works, the goal is to inspire important dialogue and action regarding ways to reclaim our minds, bodies and spiritis so that we are in a healthy position to be resources for each other as we work to dismantle harmful systems of oppression.
PROJECT GALLERY
The first four prints were created in 2023 while developing a new process, which revealed a dire need of selfcare.
The mere consideration of the project’s themes, which act as a manifesto, requires an unearthing. Moving through layers to articulate the medicines that each work of art represents compelled an unraveling of long-standing patterns. The process of artmaking itself presented a challenge to courageously face historical, societal and generational barriers to our restoration and to create language for our own healing. Overwhelmingly, Nature showed up over and over as the link back to humanity’s interdependence. We are part of an eco-system, which is impacted by every thought and action. Symbols came through meditation, dreams and journaling. These function as vocabulary for sharing vital concepts through visual poetry. Our lives are our mission and, therefore, our wellness is priority above all the world’s pretense of wealth and power. Our energy, attention and presence are the stuff of true manifestation. In other words, our true prosperity is ourselves.
During research and creation, an unplanned break became necessary. Time was needed to reveal years of social indoctrination in order integrate the lessons coming through. Giving thanks for all of the introspection that these pieces have inspired with hopes that they’ll encourage many to do the same.
To finish this project so lovingly begun, the plan is mindful dedication to completing the remaining works at an organic pace.
UPCOMING RELEASES
Note from the Artist: As part of my own radical self-care journey, I’m committed to creating and sharing the message of this collection, albeit, within a simpler process and at a more compassionate pace. So as I’m taking my time, I’ll also keep going. It’s important. ~ Nadïne
THEMES
The decision to set boundaries of rest, pause and healing; of mindfulness, being thoughtfully aware and recognizing the constructs of illusion; of connection, grounding to the Earth and practicing good stewardship inside and out; of nourishment, water, sunlight, stars and songs; of movement, dancing, stretching, climbing and building our strength; of wholeness, opting for joy in a system built on trauma; of choosing ourselves and celebrating our own beauty; of togetherness in the face of divisiveness; of empowerment, creating our own work, growing our own food, supporting our own communities; of breathing deeply and so much more, is crucial.
