It is imperative that teaching artists and the organizations partnering to serve community are aligned with how, why and the supportive and ethical conditions in which we will work.
PROFESSIONAL RESPECT
As fellow professionals in discussion regarding proposed work, mutual respect is required of our choices and actions before, during and after our connection. This includes trusting in the skills and experience of the teaching artists hired for work. Given artists have the expertise required for the proposed project, it is natural that the artist contracted for the work would lead the proposed service solution in response to the client’s needs.
CULTURAL EQUITY & SOCIAL JUSTICE
In order for Teaching Artists and Organizations to function well together, there must be in place or plans to incorporate inclusive and diverse leadership, cultural respect and equitable practices within the organizations hiring artists. Organizations complicit in oppressive systems and structures can not work ethically with artists from communities marginalized by those same systems. Therefore, we are within our rights to reject offers of work from such establishments.
HEALTH & WELL-BEING
Especially while navigating a world-wide pandemic, artists must not be put in harm’s way to entertain the public. Precautions based on the artist’s safety requirements are necessary and should be included in project agreements.
FAIR COMPENSATION
Artists of every discipline are managing creative businesses and incur costs of operation as any other small business and have responsibilities to our households and families. We greatly appreciate the consideration of our services and are prepared to work for fair compensation.
